Perry - A tragic tale with a happy ending

'Perry' was a very sorry sight indeed when we first met him in July 1995.

help He was brought to us by the RSPCA who believed him (with good reason) to be almost a lost cause. Perry had severe lead poisoning resulting in a total lack of feeling or movement in both legs. In the wild he would have died within hours.

We could see immediately that although helpless, Perry was a fighter and had a strong will to survive. He may have been a borderline case, but we had to do all we could to try and help him in his battle to live.

Perry was immediately taken to our hospital unit for urgent treatment to reduce the level of poisoning. He was nursed around the clock to see how the treatment was working. At this stage it is critical. Administering treatment to injured birds requires far more precision than say, with human patients.
This is supposed to make my legs better?

This attention and the correct environment eventually reduced the effects of the poisoning, but it still left the confused bird without the use of his legs.

With a little improvisation,we managed to make a type of 'baby walker' to support the Falcon's body. things are getting better!A little physiotherapy from us and weeks of effort on Perry's part and the legs slowly recovered. Perry required two injections of Calcium Disdodium every day to counteract the effects of the poison on his fragile bones, and to give him a fighting chance.

Freedom, at last! After eight weeks, Perry was outdoors with the other birds and the improvement was remarkable.
He was released into his natural habitat in October that year and, we are not ashamed to say, there was not a dry eye at the centre.

Most importantly he has been spotted recently in the company of a young Peregrine.

It is only through the kindness and generosity of concerned humans that we are able to help birds like Perry.
We would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all who help in so many ways, and especially with this particular bird.
